Dr. Julie James

Dr. Julie James is an Assistant Professor in the School of Child and Youth Care at X University. Prior to taking on this position, she worked with young people in a variety of settings including education, health care, and child welfare as an educator, youth worker, and/or advocate. Dr. James focuses on research that is youth-led and centers trans and/or gender diverse young people while focusing specifically on the voices of Black, Indigenous, and racialized youth. She is particularly concerned with how to do this work as a cisgender white settler in ways that reduce harm, challenge oppression, and are youth driven. Her research includes conducting a legal needs assessment for trans individuals, arts-based and social action research with caregivers and advocates of trans and/or gender diverse youth, youth-led research examining the impact of the pandemic on trans and/or gender diverse youth, and youth-led research that focuses on developing care models for all trans and/or gender diverse youth. She has also supported the development of a film and podcast series. Current and on-going work focus on:

Identifying the needs and exploring the experiences of trans and/or gender diverse youth in healthcare, education, and community services settings with a particular focus on Black, Indigenous, and/or racialized youth.

Identifying and helping to develop care models and best practices that center the voices of trans and/or gender diverse youth across services sectors.

Supporting the development of arts-based initiatives in ways that enhance resurgence practices and build communities amongst trans and/or gender diverse young people.
